Merle de Kreuk is Professor of Environmental Technology and Head of the Department of Water Management at Delft University of Technology, where her research focuses on municipal and industrial wastewater treatment systems and anaerobic processes, with the aim of bridging biotechnology and civil engineering while connecting fundamental research to industrial applications. She previously served as a water treatment technology innovator at the Water Authority Hollandse Delta, contributing to initiatives such as the Energy Factory, a collaborative effort among 14 water authorities to develop energy-producing sewage treatment plants. In recognition of her broad academic achievements and the significant societal impact of her work, she has received royal recognition as an Officer of the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands. Merle is regarded as a Water Ambassador for the next generation of engineers, an inspiration to young women, and a strong advocate for inclusion in academia and engineering sciences. She is also committed to expanding global access to education, having developed MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) on urban sewage treatment that have reached thousands of students worldwide. Affiliated with the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, her research interests include hydrolysis processes in anaerobic treatment and the formation and deterioration of granules. She holds a PhD in Environmental Biotechnology from Delft University of Technology and an MSc in Environmental Engineering from Wageningen University and Research Centre.
