Carlos Chernicharo é engenheiro civil, com mestrado em engenharia sanitária, doutorado e pós-doutorado em engenharia ambiental. Professor titular aposentado da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), onde foi docente permanente, por mais de 30 anos, do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Saneamento, Meio Ambiente e Recursos Hídricos. Coordenou o Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia em Estações Sustentáveis de Tratamento de Esgoto (INCT ETEs Sustentáveis) entre os anos de 2017 e 2022. Foi nomeado Fellow da IWA (International Water Association) em 2018. É autor de mais de 120 publicações científicas e mais de 30 livros/capítulos de livros especializados no tratamento de águas residuárias municipais. Entre estas publicações encontra-se o livro texto “Reatores Anaeróbios”, amplamente utilizado na formação de engenheiros civis, ambientais e sanitaristas no Brasil, com tradução para o inglês e para o espanhol, ademais da editoria do livro “Anaerobic reactors for sewage treatment: design, construction and operation”, publicado pela IWA publishing em 2019. É consultor internacional no tópico de tratamento anaeróbio de águas residuárias municipais. Foi professor visitante do programa de mestrado em “Água e Saneamento Urbano” do IHE/UNESCO, em Delft, na Holanda, entre 2013 e 2021. Atualmente, é sócio-diretor das empresas Chernicharo e Bressani Consultoria e Capacitação em Saneamento (CB Saneamento) e Centro de Referência em Estações Sustentáveis de Tratamento de Esgoto (CR ETES).
Carlos Chernicharo is a civil engineer with a Master’s degree in Sanitary Engineering and a Ph.D. and postdoctoral degree in Environmental Engineering. He is a retired Full Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), where he was a permanent faculty member for over 30 years in the Graduate Program in Sanitation, Environment, and Water Resources.
He coordinated the National Institute of Science and Technology for Sustainable Wastewater Treatment Plants (INCT Sustainable WWTPs) from 2017 to 2022 and was named an IWA (International Water Association) Fellow in 2018.
He is the author of more than 120 scientific publications and over 30 books and book chapters specializing in municipal wastewater treatment. Among these is the textbook Anaerobic Reactors, widely used in the education of civil, environmental, and sanitary engineers in Brazil, with translations into English and Spanish. He also edited the book Anaerobic Reactors for Sewage Treatment: Design, Construction and Operation, published by IWA Publishing in 2019.
He is an international consultant in anaerobic treatment of municipal wastewater and served as a visiting professor in the Master’s program in “Urban Water and Sanitation” at IHE/UNESCO in Delft, the Netherlands, from 2013 to 2021.
He is currently a partner and director at Chernicharo and Bressani Consulting and Training in Sanitation (CB Saneamento) and at the Reference Center for Sustainable Wastewater Treatment Plants (CR ETES).
