Germán Buitrón

Germán Buitrón is a Chemical Engineering from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He obtained a Master and Ph.D. in Water Treatment Engineering from the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Toulouse, France. Since 1994, he has worked at the Institute of Engineering – UNAM as a Senior Researcher and Professor of the Graduate Environmental Engineering program. In 2007, he founded the Laboratory of Advanced Processes for Water Treatment and the Academic Unit Juriquilla at the UNAM Queretaro Campus, where he currently works. The present research lines and interests are biological wastewater treatment, gaseous biofuels, and value-added products from wastewater and organic wastes (methane, hydrogen, bioelectrochemical systems, biopolymers, medium-chain carboxylic acids, chemicals); microalgae-bacteria systems for wastewater treatment; and biodegradation of inhibitory organic compounds present in industrial wastewater. He has over 220 scientific journal papers and book chapters (8800 citations with an H-index of 53), has given over 100 invited lectures, and has conducted over 60 funded research projects. He participates in the Management Committee of several Specialist Groups of the International Water Association. Professor Buitrón has received several national and international awards and honors. In Mexico, he is a National Researcher level III.
